How to choose a foundation based on your skin type

The best makeup base is one that evens out skin imperfections, conceals redness and acne, provides a matte or glow effect (as needed), and ensures that other makeup products last longer.

But how do you choose the right foundation? Because what suits your friend may not suit you at all. Therefore, the best foundation is one that is properly selected for your facial skin.

Types of makeup foundations

Liquid foundation

Liquid foundations are a popular choice because they are easy to apply evenly, can be layered to achieve the desired coverage, and are convenient to use. They range in consistency from runnier to thicker, and are chosen based on skin concerns and desired coverage intensity.

Compact powder

Compact powder is also a popular option, convenient to carry in your handbag every day and to adjust your makeup immediately if necessary.

It is most often used in conjunction with a liquid foundation, as compact powder helps set other makeup products, gives the face a matte finish, absorbs sebum, and conceals.

BB and CC creams

When you're on vacation or traveling, when you don't have any major skin problems and don't need to wear makeup, or if you just like very light makeup, you can use a BB or CC cream. These products provide a double effect - they moisturize the skin and at the same time slightly mask unevenness and redness.

Some products offer sun protection, so B and CC creams can become part of your daily skincare and makeup routine.

Choose your foundation according to your skin type

For you personally, the best foundation is the one that solves your problems and makes you feel great. However, it happens that a product applied by a professional looks and fits perfectly, but you personally do not know how to apply it correctly and do not get the desired effect, or when applied to your face, it not only does not hide skin imperfections, but also highlights them.

If your foundation highlights your imperfections and doesn't last all day, you're probably using the wrong product for your skin type. Here are some tips from professionals on how to choose a tinted foundation for your skin type.

For sensitive skin

Sensitive facial skin is prone to irritation and dryness. Inappropriate products will not only provide uneven coverage, but will also make problems more noticeable throughout the day and may irritate the skin even more. Therefore, what you use beforehand is especially important for sensitive skin – whether you choose a base that is suitable for this skin type, which both soothes the skin and acts as a barrier between the skin and the foundation, and helps the foundation last better throughout the day. Pay attention to the list of ingredients – alcohol, parabens and strong fragrances can irritate sensitive skin.

For combination skin

Finding the right makeup for combination skin can be a real challenge. This type of skin is usually drier in the cheeks, but more oily in the “T” zone – the forehead, nose and chin. This type of skin may need two different products for different areas of the face. Also, as with other skin types, it is very important to choose the right base before applying foundation.

For combination skin, it is recommended to choose a light-weight liquid foundation. You can then apply a compact powder to the T-zone, which will mattify, set, and help absorb excess oil.

For oily and problematic facial skin

If you have oily skin, you know how difficult it is to find the right foundation. Even the most flawless makeup can start to look shiny after just a few hours.

For oily and acne-prone skin, the best makeup base is a liquid, water-based powder that also mattifies. Make sure it doesn't contain oils or substances that can clog pores. It's also recommended to use sebum-absorbing wipes and compact powder, which will help neutralize shine during the day.

For dry skin

The wrong foundation for dry skin will highlight dry areas. You may notice flaky skin after applying the product, usually around the lips, chin, or under the nose. If your skin is prone to dryness, choose a moisturizing foundation, usually with hyaluronic acid, vitamins, or glycerin.

These ingredients will provide additional hydration during the day. It is also important to properly prepare the skin before applying foundation. Moisturize the skin with a cream, let it absorb well, use moisturizing bases before applying tinted foundation.

For mature skin

Often, mature women are afraid to use tinted foundation simply because the wrong products accentuate facial wrinkles. Foundation for mature skin should have a light consistency and contain moisturizing ingredients. Liquid tinted powders - fluids may also be suitable. Choose products that contain vitamin C, peptides and moisturizers, which will nourish the skin and give it elasticity. Concealing is also extremely important for mature skin, since skin of this age usually has pigment spots, prominent capillaries and other problems.
